Just posted this write-up Why Real 3D Still Matters, in response to all the readers citing Gravity as the new gold standard for 3D conversions.

Thanks for your article. It's hard watching a 2D movie and not to think how a scene would look like in 3D Some conversions are ok I agree. GL with your forums. I hope it goes off. What about putting a simple rating system for 3D movies? About the 3D effects. Both real 3D and conversions.

i have watched gravity the last week in theater, and all i can say is that may the almighty bless 3D! well, i agree that it would be even better if it was shot in 3D, but there is no doubt that the conversion job is mind-blowing here. if i didn't know it was a post-production or not, i would conclude that it was shot by a real 3D cam.
i have seen horrendous 3Ds with dumb story/screenplay/direction, excellent 3D movies with terrible story/screenplay/direction, and pathetic 3Ds with awesome story/screenplay/direction, but gravity excels everywhere. it is rare to find good acting in 3D movies, which was not the case here.

I really did enjoy Gravity, one of my favorite movies of 2013.

I know that gravity is post converted to 3D but its not fake. Most fake 3d comes out of screen to at least the 2nd row seat but Gravity was immersive..it pops up towards the middle row for regular 3D and IMAX 3D

Ender's Game should've been in 3D. Especially during the scene's where they were training in the big sphere.

Just wanted to say thanks for your awesome website. Watched Godzilla last night, and had I known it was converted, I wouldn't have forked over the $$$ for the darn 3D Blu-ray! Pop-out/convergence or depth is nothing if people and objects look like flat cardboards... Thanks again, will be visiting regularly!

Sorry but i couldn't find any great 3d moment in Gravity i dont know why. i hav watched 2 different versions of Gravity 3d but to me it was over publicized. The movie itself was good but 3d was way over publicized. There was a moment where i heard people sa " oh did you see that screw drop in the space scene, but i couldn't find any popout in that scene, only felt some popout 3d when the tears were floating in space .

"a very harold and kumar 3D christmas" - overall, 3D feel may not be significant (despite the movie was shot by a 3D cam), but i was dumbfound when i watched the snowfall in 3D. "avatar" - the movie itself may not be that fantastic, but 3D movements were very significant. last but not the least, "pompeii" - may feel like rip-off of gladiator or others, but the fireballs and the splinters are "wow" in 3D.

If you saw gravity In the theaters it was awe inspiring! In 3d that is. I love the converted 3d films too. Because at least they are in the format in some regard I like the native 3d is better but frankly. We are in a fight so we must support all 3d films at the theaters. I go to them all. Every single one of them.
