A quick review of two recent “sword and sandals” movies which were shot in 3D, “The Legend Of Hercules” and “Pompeii.” In my reviews, I will mostly be talking about the 3D effects. However, I will also be talking about the directing and the movie itself. Just because someone is using a 3D camera to make a movie which costs millions of dollars does not mean they know how to use it. Just to get plot points out of the way, both of these movies shamelessly rip off Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator,” and neither of them has anything to offer other than the fact they were shot in 3D.
First off, “The Legend of Hercules.” I enjoyed the first sequence in the movie, as Hercules’s “stepdad” leads an attack and conquers a city. The effects were fairly good, and since the initial scene was shot point of view, I was hoping for some cool, well shot sequences from a movie I wasn’t expecting much from. Unfortunately, I didn’t get anything beyond the opening sequence. As far as the 3D went in this movie, I found myself noticing it more in the scenes with no special effects. In my opinion, the movie was incredibly boring. Hercules never did anything remotely spectacular (unless you count yelling “I believe in you father,” lashing lightning around for awhile, and then getting your ass nearly handed to you by your HUMAN stepdad spectacular.) A bad movie by a subpar director.
Next up, we have “Pompeii.” This movie ripped of Gladiator more than “The Legend of Hercules” even thought of doing, with some “Titanic” thrown in. Paul W.S. Anderson is not a director I would say makes “good” movies. You can look up his directing credits and decide for yourself. What he does make is complete, over the top “popcorn” movies which he is really excited about, and he knows how to use a 3D camera! I bought the two “Resident Evil” movies he shot in 3D after reading about how great the 3D effects are (I may do a review in the future, but between the two, “Afterlife” is the best.) I really loved this movie, in a “so bad it’s good” way! The OOS (out of screen) effects were great as Vesuvius was erupting. There was ash and rocks all over my living room! I thought it was incredibly bad and cheesy in many respects, but I enjoyed it and was never bored! I only find it unfortunate in that this is a movie critics will point to as a movie which is ripping off people, since it is charging a premium price for 3D and not delivering a “good” movie. I’m going to tell you that if you are reading this, you might be one of the lucky people who can watch 3D at home. Watch this!
