Woah, awesome. Got to add this to the list. Didn't know that dancing and 3D had a history, and also that they were doing polarized films back then.

I remember this film coming out. Don't remember it being released in 3D in my small town. I was seven years old. I remember seeing it and I remember seeing a lot of 3D movies but it was a loooong time ago!

It's unlikely that Kiss Me Kate will ever be on 3D bluray as the it would require a major restoration. I saw it projected from film in about 2006 at a 3D film festival and they had done major work to get a matching set of left and right prints, and then resync the sound. A lot of frames were missing from one or the other so it would often go flat for a few seconds while one print had black frames. Unfortunately I don't think the 3D home market could support the cost of a proper restoration. Although when conversion gets better they could theoretically do fake 3D where they only have one eye available.

Kiss Me Kate is GLORIOUS in 3D. back at the 3D festival we chose to run an original 3 Strip Technicolor print rather than a new eastman color one. WB has a new print without splices. So it would only require. a New Left Right scan of the prints. I'm certain it would do well in its Original 3D version.

I'm in my seventies and I saw Kiss Me Kate in 3-D when it opened back in 1953. I saw it presented in polarized dual-projection 3-D. Contrary to the popular misconception, no inferior red/green glasses were used for 3-D movies in the fifties, they were only used for comic books. I saw the film at a first-run downtown theater in Houston Texas. It was in full color and it had stereophonic sound, which was perfect for a Cole Porter musical. Although it was not in CinemaScope, it was photographed and matted for widescreen projection in an aspect ratio similar to today's HDTV. The 3-D was outstanding, it was as good or better than the new 3-D movies I see today, which often look flat, especially in the close-ups. Human heads are round not flat and they should look round in 3-D. Kiss Me Kate was one of my first "date movies" and my date loved it.
One reason why many people today don't realize that Kiss Me Kate was originally shown in 3-D is because it was one of the 3-D test movies. Kiss me Kate and Dial M for Murder were shown both flat and in 3-D. These films opened in 3-D in test market cities like Houston and ran for a week in 3-D. Then, the theater would show it flat the following week and the studio would compare the box office receipts to find out if 3-D was a fad that was ending, so they could decide if it was worth the extra cost of shooting future movies in 3-D. There was also big competition to film in CinemaScope, which was cheaper to film and less complicated to project. Fortunately, I managed to see Kiss me Kate during the first week when it was shown in 3-D.
I have a 3-D TV and I've collected House Of Wax, Dial M for Murder, Creature from the Black Lagoon and Man in the Dark, along with the best of the new 3-D films. I really wish Warner's or another company would restore Kiss Me Kate and release it on a 3-D Blu-ray disk so I could add it to my collection of vintage 3-D movies. When people come over and see these old movies on a big screen in high definition 3-D they can't believe the films are over 60 years old. There are many great 3-D movies from the fifties that I would buy if they were available in 3-D today, but Kiss Me Kate is special because it represents the best of classic first generation 3-D. It deserves the same attention as House of Wax and Dial M for Murder. If they only make one more 3-D Blu-ray disk, then I hope it will be Kiss Me Kate.
